Australia has been bowled out for 214 on the first day of the first test at the Gabba against New Zealand thanks to some quality bowling from 19 year old Kiwi Tim Southee. There was also disappointment for Australia’s stand out batsman of the innings, Michael Clarke, who was bowled for 98 in an attempt to notch up his century before stumps.
After a delayed start caused by the overnight storms across southern Queensland, New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and elected to bowl on the green pitch. The decision paid off almost straight away with Matthew Hayden edging one to slip in the fourth over. Tim Southee then also claimed the wickets Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting in quick succession to have Australia reeling at 3 for 23.
As Hussey and Clarke pushed onto lunch it looked as if the Aussies were back on the right track, but a brain fade saw Hussey pad up to angling delivery from Chris Martin and he was dismissed for 35.
Andrew Symonds received a big cheer when he came to the wicket and he started well playing a few big shots before he got a ripper from Iain O’Brian and was caught behind. When Watson and Haddin were dismissed in similar fashion Australia was in deep trouble at 7 for 152 at tea.
Michael Clarke continued to watch his partners fall as he pushed toward a century and all of a sudden he found himself with Stuart Clark. Both players looked solid with Michael Clarke creeping closer battling the light, the potential rain and the close of play. Just two runs for his century Clarke attempted to push a single and got a corker from Jesse Ryder, bowling him off stump.
Southee finished with figures of 4 for 63 and was the main destroyer but was backed up well by all the other bowlers.
Redmond and How managed to see off the 5 over before stumps unscaved to finish at 0 for 7.
